French Opera Masterclass Participants 2017

Mezzo-soprano Carola Emrich-Fisher has been praised for her concert and operatic performances in the UK, US and Germany.  She recently made her London debut as Phèdre (Hippolyte et Aricie) with Linden Baroque.  She was a frequent soloist with Cantata Singers and other groups in Boston, MA.  Carola’s discography contains Newport Baroque’s Dido and Aeneas, and Cantata Singers' Divining the Incandescent.

Mexican soprano Aída De la Cruz knew from a very early age she would be destined for artistic pursuits. Equally comfortable with paintbrushes and canvases, it was the musical arts that caught her attention most of all. She studied at the Conservatorio de Música in her hometown of Chihuahua, Mexico and she earned her voice degree from Oakland University in Michigan, USA.

In 2007, she was privileged to receive the Hollingsworth Grant to be a part of the AIMS Summer Voice program in Graz, Austria, where she was a finalist in the Meistersinger competition. She was a part of the Michigan Opera Theatre Summer Voice Program. Since then she has been a regular singer with the renowned choruses at Michigan Opera Theatre, where she participated in the world premiere of David DiChiera’s Cyrano, and Fort Worth Opera, where she participated in the world premiere of Jorge Martín’s Before Night Falls.

In 2011 she took part in the young artist program at Ash Lawn Opera summer festival in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 2012 she performed the role of Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart with Toronto Summer Opera Workshop in a concert version. In 2014 Aída gave a concert with the Bulgarian Institute of Culture in Berlin. For the last year Aída has collaborated with Opera on Tap Berlin where she performed the role of La Voix in their production of Les Comtes d’Hoffmann. In May of 2016 Aída gave a full recital with the Opera on Tap Liederabend series.

Joanne Roughton-Arnold (soprano) recently commissioned, produced and premiered ‘Iris Dreaming’ in London and New Zealand, a one-woman opera by Dame Gillian Whitehead and Fleur Adcock. Other performances include her first appearance at the Royal Opera House (a research and development workshop on Roberto David Rusconi’s new opera, Dionysos), roles with Chelsea Opera Group and Opera Holland Park and concert appearances at HM Treasury and Handel House Museum.

Shirley Brice studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity College of Music.  She has sung with Kent Opera, New Sadler’s Wells/Covent Garden, Opera Factory Zurich and London.  After a career break Shirley attended the 2015 Crear Song Recital Course and is delighted to return for the French Opera Course.
